North Korea says the Kang Kon, a destroyer that tipped over during its May 2025 launch, has entered service with the country's East Sea fleet. The Wall Street Journal reports that the ship's return turns a rare, public embarrassment for Kim Jong Un into a claim of progress for his navy.
At a September 6 commissioning ceremony in Wonsan, Kim presented the vessel as part of an accelerated naval buildup. The Kang Kon is the second large destroyer North Korea has commissioned in recent months, following the Choe Hyon, according to Yonhap News Agency.
The announcement warrants caution. North Korean statements about a ship's capabilities, readiness and intended mission cannot be independently verified, and commissioning a repaired vessel does not demonstrate its wartime effectiveness. The Associated Press noted the timing alongside a U.S.-South Korea-Japan military exercise.
For Kim, the political point is as important as the naval one: a warship that once symbolized a setback is now being recast as evidence that North Korea can recover quickly and keep expanding the tools it says are meant to complicate allied planning around the peninsula.
